World Mental Health Day 2019

Good Mental Health is important for everyone and depends on many different factors. Exercise is one of the best things you can do to keep yourself feeling engaged, motivated and positive. Start with an achievable routine doing something you love, start small and track your progress. Sticking to your exercise routine will improve your concentration, raise your energy levels, improve your confidence, boost your mood, release stress and help you sleep better.

Healthy sleep is an important aspect of good mental health and it can be frustrating and upsetting when you are not getting the sleep you need. Having an ‘electronic sundown’- turning screens and phones off an hour before bedtime can help. Sleeping for the same amount of time each night and sitting in the sun for a few minutes when you wake each morning can reset your body clock, helping you get the right amount of sleep each day. The amino acid tryptophan can help with neurotransmitters that support sleep and can be found in bananas, beans, beef, cottage cheese, fish, legumes, oats, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and soy beans.

Network of People

Having a network of people to talk to can help with keeping our mental health in good shape. A variety of relationships provides a strong support system, with each type of relationship bringing different benefits and challenges. Try to stay in touch with friends, family, workmates or neighbors and people with similar interests so you can help each other feel connected. Talking to people can give you a different perspective and make things feel so much better.

Nutrition and good mental health go hand in hand. Omega-3 EFA, protein, vitamin D, B vitamins and minerals like magnesium, zinc and iron are all associated with healthy mood and good cognitive function. It has been shown that people with good nutritional status respond faster and more positively to antidepressant medication.
